We will equip you with a pioneering framework to diagnose client blind spots with profound accuracy, facilitate genuine breakthroughs, and empower those you coach to achieve sustainable peak performance. Key Takeaways

  • Move beyond surface-level goals by understanding the core motivations that truly drive client success and resistance.
  • Pinpoint the unique performance blind spots associated with each Enneagram type to facilitate powerful, targeted breakthroughs.
  • Implement a practical 3-step framework to elevate your practice of high performance coaching with the enneagram and guide clients from insight to impact.
  • Learn why the Enneagram is a strategic compass for motivation, not just a personality label, to unlock deeper and more sustainable client growth.

Beyond Goals: What is High-Performance Coaching & Where Does It Fall Short?

High-performance coaching is a dynamic, results-oriented partnership designed to help individuals and teams unlock and maximize their professional potential. The standard model is powerful and effective, focusing on a clear framework for success: setting SMART goals, establishing rigorous accountability structures, and building specific, measurable skills. For many, this approach yields immediate and impressive results, accelerating careers and achieving ambitious targets.

Yet, a common plateau emerges. Initial momentum wanes, old habits and self-sabotaging patterns resurface, and progress stalls. The reason is simple yet profound: conventional coaching excels at addressing the ‘what’ (the behavior to change) and the ‘how’ (the strategy to use), but it often fails to uncover the deep-seated ‘why’ that truly drives human action. Lasting transformation requires more than just a better strategy; it demands a deeper understanding of the self.

The Challenge of Surface-Level Change

Accountability partners and meticulously planned schedules are essential tools, but they are not enough to sustain change. They often treat symptoms—like procrastination or conflict avoidance—without diagnosing the root cause. This is like repeatedly fixing a car that keeps breaking down without ever looking at the engine. True performance mastery is blocked by our ‘motivational blind spots’—the unconscious fears, desires, and assumptions that dictate our behavior when willpower inevitably runs out.

The Search for a Deeper Diagnostic Tool

To break through this performance ceiling, we must transition from purely behavioral coaching to truly transformational coaching. This evolution requires a diagnostic tool capable of illuminating the internal operating system that governs our decisions. We need a framework that reveals not just what we do, but why we do it. The journey toward sustainable excellence begins with a system like the Enneagram of Personality, which maps our core motivations. This is the foundational difference that elevates the practice into authentic high performance coaching with the enneagram, turning fleeting behavioral adjustments into profound, permanent growth.

The Enneagram: A Strategic Compass, Not Just a Personality Map

To achieve sustainable excellence, high performers need more than a list of behavioral traits; they need a deep understanding of their core motivations. The Enneagram is a powerful and dynamic system that illuminates nine fundamental patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting. It’s not a tool for putting people into a box, but rather a profound framework for showing them the unconscious box they already inhabit—and providing the key to step out of it.

Unlike assessments such as Myers-Briggs or DISC, which primarily describe what you do, the Enneagram reveals why you do it. It goes beyond surface-level behavior to uncover the unconscious drivers that shape your decisions, reactions, and leadership style. This focus on motivation is precisely what makes high performance coaching with the enneagram so uniquely transformative.

Understanding the Three Centers of Intelligence

The Enneagram organizes the nine types into three distinct Centers of Intelligence, each representing a primary way we process information and react to the world. Mastering your dominant center—and developing the other two—is a cornerstone of emotional intelligence and self-awareness.

  • The Gut/Body Center (Types 8, 9, 1): This center operates on instinct, intuition, and a focus on control and justice in the present moment.
  • The Heart/Feeling Center (Types 2, 3, 4): Driven by emotion and a focus on image, connection, and significance in relation to others.
  • The Head/Thinking Center (Types 5, 6, 7): This center processes through analysis, planning, and a focus on creating security and managing future uncertainty.

Core Fears and Core Desires: The Engine of Behavior

At the heart of each Enneagram type is a fundamental fear and a corresponding core desire. This motivational pairing acts as the engine for our behavior, driving our greatest strengths and our most challenging blind spots. For example, a Type 3 (The Achiever) is driven by a core fear of being worthless and, in turn, a core desire to feel valuable and worthwhile. This can fuel incredible ambition but also lead to burnout when their self-worth becomes tied exclusively to external validation.

Identifying these deep-seated drivers is the key that unlocks why even the most successful leaders get stuck. When you understand what truly motivates your team members, you can create the environment of trust and awareness that exceptional High-Performing Teams depend on to innovate and thrive. This insight moves coaching from a tactical exercise to a profound journey of personal and professional mastery.

Coaching Through the 9 High-Performer Blind Spots

Understanding the Enneagram framework is the first step; applying it is where transformation begins. Every high-performer, regardless of their success, operates with a core blind spot—a default pattern that can derail progress, strain teams, and limit potential. This is where the profound, practical application of high performance coaching with the enneagram comes to life.

By grouping the nine types into their core Triads of Intelligence (Gut, Heart, and Head), we can illuminate these patterns and use targeted coaching to unlock new levels of awareness and effectiveness.

The Gut Triad (8, 9, 1): The Blind Spot of Control

Driven by instinct and a need to assert their will on the environment, leaders in the Gut Triad often over-rely on control. This manifests in distinct ways:

  • Type 8: Over-exerting control through direct force, leading to team intimidation and burnout.
  • Type 9: Avoiding conflict to maintain internal and external peace, stalling crucial decisions.
  • Type 1: Rigidly controlling processes and standards, inadvertently stifling creativity and innovation.

Coaching Question to Spark Awareness: “What might become possible if you chose to trust your team’s process instead of controlling the outcome?”

The Heart Triad (2, 3, 4): The Blind Spot of Image

Motivated by their feelings and a deep need to be valued, high-achievers in the Heart Triad can become fixated on their image and how they are perceived by others.

  • Type 2: Over-helping to be seen as indispensable, which can create unhealthy dependency.
  • Type 3: Chasing external success metrics and accolades, sometimes losing touch with their authentic goals.
  • Type 4: Equating their identity with unique, exceptional results, causing them to fear ‘ordinary’ but vital success.

Coaching Question to Spark Awareness: “If you removed all external validation, what would true, fulfilling success look and feel like to you?”

The Head Triad (5, 6, 7): The Blind Spot of Security

Leaders in the Head Triad are motivated by a need for safety and certainty. Their thinking becomes a tool to manage anxiety, but it can also become a barrier to action.

  • Type 5: Over-analyzing to feel fully prepared, leading to ‘analysis paralysis’ and missed opportunities.
  • Type 6: Constantly planning for the worst-case scenario, which paralyzes them from taking necessary risks.
  • Type 7: Proactively avoiding negative feedback or difficult situations to stay positive, missing key growth opportunities.

Coaching Question to Spark Awareness: “What is the smallest, most manageable risk you can take this week to move forward, even with incomplete information?”

High Performance Coaching with the Enneagram: The Definitive 2026 Guide

A Practical 3-Step Framework for Enneagram-Informed Coaching

Integrating the Enneagram into your coaching practice doesn’t require reinventing your methodology. Instead, it provides a powerful lens to enhance it. This simple yet profound 3-step framework is designed to accelerate client transformation by moving them from initial insight to sustainable, high-impact action. Think of this not as a replacement for your core coaching skills, but as a strategic amplifier.

This systematic approach makes the entire concept of high performance coaching with the enneagram feel achievable and repeatable, empowering both you and your client on a shared journey of discovery and growth.

Step 1: Cultivate Awareness (See the Pattern)

The first step is to guide your client toward recognizing their type’s automatic patterns in a compassionate, non-judgmental way. Through keen observation and powerful, open-ended questions, you can illuminate the “what” of their behavior. The goal is self-discovery, not diagnosis. For instance, you might ask a client, “I notice when feedback is delivered, your focus immediately shifts to problem-solving. Where else in your work does this pattern of taking immediate charge show up?”

Step 2: Practice Acceptance (Own the Motivation)

Once a pattern is identified, the journey moves deeper to uncover the “why.” This step is about connecting the behavior to the core desire or fear of the client’s Enneagram type. You help them shift from a self-critical “Why do I always do this?” to an empowering, “Ah, this is driven by my core need for security/value/connection.” This crucial phase reduces internal resistance and builds the self-compassion necessary for genuine change, turning a perceived flaw into a recognized motivation.

Step 3: Choose Action (Develop New Strategies)

With awareness and acceptance as a foundation, the final step is to empower choice. Here, you collaborate with your client to brainstorm new, conscious behaviors that honor their core need but employ a more resourceful strategy. The Enneagram’s built-in growth paths provide a brilliant roadmap for this. For example, a Type 8 client can practice moving toward their Type 2 growth point by consciously choosing vulnerability and connection over pure control in a high-stakes negotiation. This is where high performance coaching with the enneagram creates tangible, transformative results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Enneagram a scientifically validated tool for coaching?

The Enneagram is a powerful framework for self-awareness, not a clinical diagnostic tool validated by traditional psychometric standards. Its profound value in coaching comes from its ability to reveal core motivations, fears, and pathways for growth. For decades, leaders and coaches have used it to achieve tangible, transformative results by providing a deep, insightful map of the human psyche, which accelerates personal and professional development in a way few other systems can.

How do I help a client determine their Enneagram type accurately?

Accurate typing is a journey of self-discovery, not a simple test. While quality assessments provide a strong starting point, the most transformative approach involves a guided typing interview. As a coach, you help clients explore their core motivations—not just their behaviors. This collaborative process empowers the client to own their discovery, ensuring the typing is accurate and deeply resonant, which is the essential foundation for meaningful growth and lasting transformation.

Can high performance coaching with the Enneagram be used for teams, not just individuals?

Absolutely. High performance coaching with the Enneagram is an exceptional tool for elevating team dynamics and organizational effectiveness. By understanding the diverse motivations and communication styles within a team, you can foster greater empathy, reduce conflict, and enhance collaboration. This framework provides a shared language for growth, empowering teams to leverage their collective strengths and navigate challenges with heightened self-awareness, ultimately accelerating their journey toward peak performance and synergy.

What’s the difference between Enneagram coaching and therapy?

The distinction is clear: coaching is future-focused, while therapy often addresses healing the past. Enneagram coaching empowers clients to unlock their potential by focusing on self-awareness, goal achievement, and performance enhancement. It uses the Enneagram to build on strengths and overcome limiting patterns. Therapy, in contrast, is a clinical practice designed to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, often exploring past trauma to facilitate healing. Coaching is about moving from functional to exceptional.

How long does it take to become proficient in using the Enneagram for coaching?

The journey to proficiency is ongoing and deeply rewarding. Foundational competence can be achieved through a comprehensive certification program, typically spanning several months of intensive learning and application. True mastery, however, develops over years of dedicated practice, continuous education, and supervised coaching experience. It is a commitment to your own growth as a coach, allowing you to guide clients with increasing depth, insight, and transformative impact on their journey to excellence.

Do I need to be certified to use the Enneagram in my coaching practice?

While there is no legal requirement, professional certification is the gold standard for credibility, competence, and ethical practice. A rigorous certification program ensures you have a deep, nuanced understanding of the system, moving beyond surface-level stereotypes. It equips you with proven frameworks and tools to apply the Enneagram responsibly and effectively, empowering you to deliver transformative results for your clients and establishing your authority in the field of professional coaching.

What is a WSQ-accredited coaching course?

A WSQ (Workforce Skills Qualifications) accredited course is a program formally recognized by the Singapore government. This accreditation signifies that the course meets rigorous national standards for quality, relevance, and effectiveness in professional development. For coaches, completing a WSQ-accredited program means you are gaining a credential that is highly respected locally and internationally, demonstrating a commitment to excellence and mastery in your professional practice and enhancing your credibility with corporate clients.

Really enjoyed the session! The facilitators were very spontaneous and used many real-life examples instead of just sharing theories. You can really tell they have deep knowledge and experience in Enneagram, especially when it comes to understanding human behaviour, which can be complex. I was impressed by how they explained everything in such a simple and relatable way.

I also got to understand myself better and why people around me behave and communicate differently. It helped me become more empathetic and more aware of how I communicate with others.

Highly recommended for anyone who is curious to learn more about themselves, understand others better, and improve their communication skills. Definitely a go-to programme. Thank you, Dr Granville and Alicia, for the insightful and enjoyable session!

I recently completed the Enneagram Level 3 course with EQ World, and it was an exceptional experience. The course was not only deeply insightful but also highly practical. The integration of the Enneagram with emotional intelligence principles provided a comprehensive understanding of both self-awareness and interpersonal dynamics. I particularly appreciated the focus on “Passion by Type” and the “Importance of Instinct”, which offered profound insights into how our core motivations shape our behaviors. The EQ Competency Framework was a standout element, providing clear guidance on developing emotional intelligence in real-world scenarios. Additionally, learning about the “4 Stages of Team Development” helped me better understand group dynamics and how to lead teams more effectively.

Both trainers Dr Gran & Alicia were knowledgeable, engaging, and provided clear, actionable steps to apply the learning in both personal and professional contexts. I found the exercises, especially the coaching techniques, to be incredibly valuable. Overall, it was a well-structured, impactful course that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to deepen their understanding of the Enneagram and enhance their emotional intelligence.

The team is so warm, so welcoming, and what I really appreciate is how non-judgmental and inclusive they are. Whether you’re new to the Enneagram or have been studying it for a while, they make you feel completely at home.

I always walk away with deeper awareness, practical tools, and a whole lot of “aha!” moments. It’s not just theory—they really help you apply it in real life. Big thank you to Gran wnd Alicia. Keep doing what you do. You’re making a real difference in people’s lives—and I’m grateful to be on this journey with you. Two thumbs up!

Before discovering the Enneagram, I always saw myself as a fun, easygoing and jovial person. I thought being “fun” was simply a positive trait — something that made people enjoy being around me. As a core Type 7, I believed that everything in my life had to be fun — otherwise I would quickly lose interest or disengage.

What I didn’t realise was that even “fun” has different levels. Through the Enneagram, I learnt that there is a difference between developed and undeveloped expressions of it. Looking back, I began to recognise that my version of “fun” was sometimes a way to avoid discomfort, deflect deeper emotions, or keep things light so I didn’t have to face what was really going on.

At the same time, I started to notice something else — some of my friends were slowly distancing themselves, and I didn’t fully understand why. I would often reframe it as them being busy, but deep down, something didn’t quite sit right.

Through the Enneagram and EQ World’s programmes, I began to see myself more clearly. I realised that my energy could sometimes come across as too intense or overwhelming. When things didn’t go my way, I could become a stronger, more controlling version of myself without even being aware of it.

That was quite a confronting but important realisation — understanding that it wasn’t just circumstances, but also how I was showing up.

What I appreciated about EQ World’s approach is that it wasn’t judgmental. Instead, it gave me the language and awareness to understand my patterns, pause, and choose how I want to respond.

More importantly, I’ve come to realise that fun doesn’t always have to come from what I’m doing — it’s also about how I experience things. Even routine or challenging situations can be meaningful and enjoyable when I show up differently.

Over time, I’ve become more grounded, more present, and less forceful in how I interact with others. And interestingly, I began to see changes in my relationships as well — friends started coming back, and many have shared that they find me more approachable and easier to connect with now.

Today, I still value being fun and light-hearted, but it comes from a more developed and conscious place. I’m more intentional, more aware of myself and others, and better able to manage how I show up. This journey has been deeply meaningful, both personally and professionally, and I’m grateful for the growth it has brought into my life.

I attended the WSQ Negotiation with Enneagram course with Dr Gran and Alicia. I thought I was just going to learn my type, but it went deeper. I now understand my patterns and defence mechanisms, and I catch myself when I slip into default so I can adjust how I communicate.

The session was engaging and practical. The stories made each type easy to recognise, and I could apply it immediately.

I signed up for the Enneagram practitioner program after the course to upgrade myself.

Speaker, Executive Coach, and Author of InSide: Break Through Your BS to Influence Yourself

I entered the speaking and coaching industry the way a lot of driven people do — by doing more, learning more, and hustling more.

I thought the gap between where I was and where I wanted to be could be closed with sheer effort. What I didn’t realise was that my addiction to achievement was the gap.

That’s what the Enneagram showed me — and specifically, what Granville and the EQ World team helped me see. Not through dry theory, but through powerful storytelling, rich content, and the facilitation that makes you feel safe enough to be honest with yourself.

From one-day workshops to multi-day certifications, every programme gave me something I could immediately apply — first to my own development, and then to the leaders and teams I work with. EQ World’s Enneagram programmes gave me self-insight. It gave me a language for the patterns I couldn’t see and the courage to do something about them.

Today, I’m able to speak, train and coach leaders and corporate teams with conviction — and the Enneagram is woven through all of it. Granville, you and the EQ World team changed the trajectory of my life. And I don’t say that lightly.

Attended level 1 and level 2 of the Enneagram courses and it exceeded all my expectations! What was especially meaningful for me is that it deepened my self-understanding, highlighting how we can remain true to our core type while adapting to various scenarios. The conversations with the group were very interesting too. This has helped me greatly when interacting with the people around me, helping me at work and to understand my loved ones better too. The instructors did an excellent job of breaking down complex concepts into easy-to-understand models, presenting them in a clear, step-by-step structure that I didn’t think was possible. This course is truly worth exploring!

I recently had the privilege of spending a few precious days with an incredible group of people at the Enneagram Level 2 course.

In a world where many are moving fast but not necessarily growing, this experience was a powerful reminder of the importance of deep self-understanding.

Because growth is not just about doing more. It is about seeing more—about becoming more aware of who we are, how we show up, and why we do what we do.

If you are looking to fast-track both your personal and professional growth, this is more than just a course—it is a transformative journey.

My heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Gran and Alicia for guiding us with such depth, wisdom, and genuine passion. Their ability to create both clarity and breakthrough is truly remarkable.

Grateful for the experience, the insights, and the people.

Just completed 4 amazing days of High Performance Coaching with Enneagram (Level 2) with Alicia and Granville.

I came in expecting a few practical tools and perhaps a clearer structure to what I already “knew” from the first course. I did not expect to have my mind blown.

A large part of why this experience was so impactful comes down to Gran and Alicia. They are highly engaging and clearly deeply immersed in their work. More than just delivering content, they hold the space with intention and have so many great examples and stories that bring the content to life.

They also created an environment that felt safe to explore and be vulnerable.

If you want to learn an incredible way to be a better person and improve your interpersonal relationships i highly recommend signing up for one of their courses.

I just completed High Performance Coaching with Enneagram Level 2, and I have to say this was on a completely different level. Dr Gran and Alicia are exceptional coaches. What stood out most was not just their depth of knowledge, but their ability to translate the Enneagram into practical, high-performance application. This wasn’t theory for the sake of theory. Every concept was tied back to real-life coaching, leadership, and decision-making.

Dr Gran brings a very sharp, structured perspective. You can tell there is a strong foundation behind everything he teaches. The way he breaks down patterns, motivations, and blind spots is precise and insightful. Alicia complements that perfectly with her ability to bring warmth, intuition, and real human understanding into the room. She has a way of making complex dynamics feel very clear and relatable, especially in live coaching situations.

What I appreciated most are the depth of the Enneagram beyond surface-level typing, how to identify real drivers, not just behaviours, practical coaching frameworks that I can immediately apply and thhe balance between structure and intuition

This course stretched my thinking and sharpened how I observe, question, and guide others. It’s not just about becoming a better coach, it’s about becoming far more aware of how people actually operate. Highly recommended for anyone serious about coaching, leadership, or understanding people at a much deeper level!
